Simple Layouts
 |
Simple Layouts allow you to print an image in a portrait or landscape format
or print multiple images on a single page.
Portrait and landscape are standard printing terms that refer to the orientation of
the image and text on printed page. Portrait refers to a page that is taller than it
is wide while landscapes are wider than they are tall.
To choose a specific layout, first select Simple Layouts from the drop-down menu next to
Page Layout. Then scroll through
the list of
layouts that appears and choose the one that best fits your needs.
If you've chosen Full Page instead of a specific layout, you can specify an image size. Choose Fill Printable Area
if you want your image scaled to fit an entire page.
(NOTE: Resizing a bitmapped image
like a photo
means you resample the image and lose quality. Filling the printed page with a small image
might make it appear grainy and pixelated depending on the resolution of the image.)

Choose Actual Size (inches) to print your image using the image resolution embedded in it.
You can adjust the actual size of your image before printing from the
Image menu. To learn more about how resolution affects the actual size of your image,
read our quick lesson on resolution.
Choose Actual Size (pixels) to print your image based on your printer's resolution.
With this option checked, your printer will print one printer dot per every computer pixel.

If you choose to print a small image at a large size, the pixels in your
image are stretched in order to fill the requested print area.
Your eye perceives this as a blocky, blurry, or "pixelated" effect.
To avoid this, print your image at a smaller size or use a higher resolution image.
Below is a list of some general guidelines for the minimum number of pixels needed to create a good, photo-quality image:
- For a 2" x 3" print, the image dimensions should be 400 x 600 pixels minimum
- For a 4" x 6" print, the image dimensions should be 800 x 600 pixels minimum
- For a 5" x 7" print, the image dimensions should be 1000 x 1400 pixels minimum
- For an 8" x 10" print, the image dimensions should be 1600 x 2000 pixels minimum
Of course photo quality is in the eye of the beholder. You'll probably need to experiment to find
a picture size where you are happy with your printed results.
