| Four Easy Projects With Layers |
10. Add a photo object.
Take a favorite photo of a flower or any decorative item and carefully
trace the object using the Polygon Selection Tool .
To start, click anywhere along
the outline of the object once. Now trace the outline of your object in as many or as few clicks as you want.
The more often you click down with your mouse, the shorter your selection
lines will be, making your selection more precise.
To close the selection, double-click with the mouse.
You can modify the selection using the growth handles located around the object
wherever you clicked down with the mouse. To move one, click down on it and without
letting go of the mouse, move it to a different position.
You can also add to the original selection area by holding down the
Shift key (to subtract from the original selection hold down the Alt key instead).
Simply choose a selection tool, hold down the Shift key, and draw a selection as
you would normally. The little plus sign inside the selection cursor indicates
that instead of creating a new selection, you are adding to the original.
Feel free to mix and match selection tools. Even if the original selection
was created using the polygon selection tool, you can add to it with
the Oval, Rectangle, Magic Wand, or Lasso tools and vice versa.
Once your selection is complete, copy-paste it onto a new layer on your main project file.
As with all selections, these too can be modified. We resized our flower object
and changed its hue to better match
the rest of our image.
Adjust the colors or hue of the selection to match the rest of your project
You can also use the Eraser Tool to make additional modifications to the selection. Simply zoom in on any
problem areas, select a small brush size, and erase. When using layers, the Eraser tool will actually delete the pixels
instead of painting over them, making it a great tool for cleaning up photo objects.
