Four Easy Projects With Layers

Project 4: Combine Images for Printing and Publishing
Combine images to post on the web, print, or set as your computer's wallpaper.

Just follow these step-by-step instructions:

1. Open a new image (File menu->New) and set the size of your work area. If you're making a page destined for the printer set your resolution to 300 dpi and specify the size in inches: 5"x7", 4"x6", 12"x12", and so on.

If you're making wallpaper for your computer or if you want to post your project to the web, set your size in terms of pixels (i.e. 1600x1200, 800x600, and so on) and don't worry about inches or resolution.

Hint: If you want to create a faded look using a photograph, we suggest you choose white as your background color.

Open a new image 2. Create a new layer (Image->Layers->Add Layer) and add a photo or another graphic to be used as the background.

3. Reduce the opacity of this new photo layer to create a subtle, washed out effect.

Adjust the opacity of the background photo for a subtle effect

You can also change the hue (and other characteristics) of your selection. In our example, we wanted to create a more blue-toned background, so we selected Adjust Hue from the Adjust Colors dialog under the Image menu and changed the color cast of our image.

Adjust the hue by selecting Adjust Colors
from the Image menu, then Adjust Hue from
the drop-down list on the dialog
