Got Questions about Layers? We Have the Answers
How do I create a new layer?
Select Layers and choose Add New Layer under the Image menu.

Can I rename a layer?
Yes. Simply, select Rename Layer from the layer tab's right-click menu.

How can I see what's on a specific layer?
Click on the tab of any specific layer and from the right-click menu uncheck Show Layer. What disappears from your image is what is on the layer.

Which layer is the active layer?
Clicking on a layer tab makes that layer active. The active layer has a larger, brighter tab than the others.

All the layers look the same even though I'm clicking on the correct tabs
By default all layers are visible at any given time, so the top layer can easily obscure anything underneath it. To see what's on the bottom layer, it might be best to make all other layers temporarily invisible by unchecking Show Layers for each one.

How do I select an object on a layer?
Click on the correct layer tab, then hit Ctrl+A to select all. This command will select any object contained on that layer. You can then move it or apply any special effects.

Can I move a specific layer to the top of the stack?
You can rearrange the order of your layers by dragging the layer tabs left and right (the right most layer is on top, the left most layer is on the bottom), or by choosing Change Layer Order from the Layer menu.

I don't need all the layers I created. Is there a way I move one layer to another?
You can merge two or more adjacent layers into one by using the Combine Layers command in the Layers menu. Select two or more layers by clicking on one and then holding Ctrl while you click on the others. Only adjacent layers can be combined. If you want to combine layers that are not adjacent, you must move them first using the Change Layer Order command. You can also combine all the layers into one by choosing Merge All.
