How to Optimize Your Photos and Graphics

Step 3: Reduce Colors
You can also reduce file size by reducing the number of colors in an image. An image saved using 2 colors will be substantially smaller than an image saved using 256 colors. This works best with images that have solid colors and little or no fine gradations.

A dramatic reduction in color for an image that originally contained lots of colors will result in color banding. Color banding is the appearance of visible bands of colors that replace subtle gradations in order to accommodate a reduced color palette. When reducing colors, you have to decide how much quality you are willing to sacrifice for a reduction in file size.

Full color original: 16 KB

16 color version: 2.43 KB

256 colors: 7.93 KB

2 colors: 706 bytes

Learn about Dithering
As you reduce the colors of an image, dithering can help eliminate color banding by tricking your eye. Dithering involves mixing the existing colors in a palette to create the illusion of another color that is not available in the given palette. There are two types of dithering: pattern and diffusion. Pattern dithering arranges pixels in a rigid pattern. Diffusion dithering applies a random pattern of pixels that adds a subtle grainy texture to the image. Keep in mind that dithering a reduced color image will increase the file size a little.
