How to Optimize Your Photos and Graphics

Step 2: Resize the Image
Another way to reduce the file size of an image is to resize it. To resize an image in FotoFinish select Resize from the Image menu. Here you can set the pixel dimensions of your graphic (just type in one value, the other dimension will fill in automatically) or you can just scale by percentage values.

Resize your image using the Scale command under
the Image menu

When you change the pixel dimensions of a bitmap image, you are downgrading its quality and sharpness not just changing its size. This change in the pixel dimensions of an image is called resampling. As with all optiziming you have to balance the trade in file size with a reduction in quality.

Resampling Options
By default, FotoFinish uses Smart Resampling to resample images that you scale down. This type of resampling blends details taken out of the photo with details that remain.

If you don't want FotoFinish to apply any resampling, click on More in the Scale dialog and choose No Resampling from the drop-down menu of options.

The original image
Pixel dimensions: 141 by 211
File size: 11 KB

The resized version
Pixel dimensions: 102 by 152
File size: 6 KB
