How to Optimize Your Photos and Graphics

Step 1: Crop to Eliminate Distraction and Reduce File Size
The best way to minimize the file size of an image is to reduce its physical size or the number of pixels it contains. You can do this two ways: either crop the image or resize it.

First let's look at cropping. Take a close look at your illustration to see if you can eliminate distractions and focus your image on a particular subject. In our example, we realized we didn't need the entire image of the woman on the phone so we cropped it to focus on the most important portion.

To crop an image in FotoFinish, click on the Crop Tool on the toolbar if you own FotoFinish STUDIO or SUITE (or click on the Crop button on the Wizard Panel if you own FotoFinish BASIC).

This will drop a cropping frame on your image.

Position the selection over the area you want to keep by dragging the adjustment handles with your mouse. Once you've finalized your selection, click the Crop Image button to crop.

The original image: 13 KB

The cropped version: 7 KB

Crop an image to help focus your illustration and also to reduce the file size of your upload.
